Thurgood Marshall School of Law Director Honored Nationally for Service to Legal Education

Lisa DeLaTorre

Lisa DeLaTorre, Associate Director of Academic Success and Bar Readiness at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law (TMSL), was recently honored for her exceptional service by the Association of Academic Support Educators (AASE), the national professional organization dedicated to advancing academic support in legal education.

DeLaTorre received a distinguished service award during the AASE’s annual conference, recognizing her tireless contributions, professional dedication, and leadership in the legal academic support community. This accolade reflects not only her impactful work at TMSL but also her service to a national network of professionals who support student success in law schools across the country.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized by my peers,” said DeLaTorre. “I take great pride in the work we do at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, helping our students thrive academically and professionally. It’s especially meaningful to contribute to the success of law students nationwide through AASE.”

In addition to receiving the service award, DeLaTorre was elected Secretary-Elect of the AASE Board in May 2024. This role typically involves a year of shadowing and training before transitioning into the official Secretary position. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, she assumed full Secretary duties earlier than expected in January 2025—six months ahead of schedule—demonstrating her readiness and resilience in leadership.

Her election to a national board position by fellow academic support professionals underscores the respect and confidence she has earned across the legal education community. As Secretary, DeLaTorre plays a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s initiatives, communications, and governance.

DeLaTorre’s recognition and board service position her—and TSU—at the forefront of national conversations about bar readiness, academic success, and equitable legal education.
